Joselyne Bravo | HSE Manager

As we continue to celebrate Women’s Equality Day, we were lucky enough to sit down with the inspirational Joselyne Bravo.

Joselyne is one of our HSE Managers at Sensia México and leads an all-female team of safety experts that ensure we are a partner of choice for our customers across the region.

Joselyn took some time out to tell us about her career experiences. Here’s what she had to say.

Sometimes our capabilities are under-estimated

Hola, Joselyne. Thanks for taking the time to speak to us. We’re excited to hear your story. First, could you tell us a little about your time at Sensia?

Hola. De nada. Of course. I joined the industry as an AutoCAD drawer when I was 21. But then, as I got into it, I learned about fire systems and safety. It really caught my attention, so I decided to specialize in this area.

It’s been a great experience so far. Sensia is one of the largest oil and gas companies in México, and I get to see so many facilities across the country. To be part of a company where safety and sustainability are so important is inspiring.

Oil and gas is a male dominated industry – what challenges have you encountered on your journey?

As a woman in this industry, it is sad to see there are sometimes still cases where our capabilities are underestimated. And sometimes, that can lead to people being overlooked.

Fortunately, at Sensia, I don't experience this. My views, ideas, and proposals are always listened to, which is empowering. It means I’m not afraid to express myself.

How can we utilize occasions like Women’s Equality Day to further empower women?

Women’s Equality Day is a great initiative. It’s a fantastic platform to recognize the achievements of women so that we can inspire others to follow in our footsteps. Why limit it to occasions? We can celebrate our women all the time.

Being seen as equals

In your opinion, is the industry changing in its approach to women? And how has that helped you?

Absolutely. Overall, women seem to be listened to on more equal terms as men. Companies are developing their equality programs, and there is more support than in previous times.

For me and my team, being seen as equals with common goals is helping us reach our potential. Only by encouraging women to work in our industry can we create true equality.

These days, we have more women at Sensia than ever before. Here, women have forums to express themselves. Their value and contributions are felt across the business. By working this way, we’re able to widen the talent pool. In turn, we can innovate in our core digital transformation space, more and more.

With more women innovators and leaders, how can we harness their knowledge and skills in areas such as sustainable transformation?

By developing a listen-first approach and valuing the contributions of our women, we’ll continue to help the industry meet its net-zero target – while remaining profitable and safe.

That said, we’ll only continue to attract more women if we keep investing in equality programs, using more gender-neutral job advertising, and having the confidence to break stereotypes so women feel empowered to speak.

Don’t doubt your capability

Embracing diversity brings the best results. What advice would you pass to young women entering our industry?

Don’t doubt your capability. Your skills and knowledge are needed, so you’re here for a reason. Be confident and never be afraid to fail – nobody is immune to failure, so embrace it. It’s better to fail and learn than never try.

Gracias, Joselyne. We hope you enjoyed telling us your experiences as much as we loved hearing about them. You and your team are a true inspiration to women in our industry. We’ve enjoyed celebrating Women’s Equality Day with you.
