Women leading the way on sustainability.

February 08, 2024 | Written by: Sensia

February 11, 2024, sees the 9th United Nations International Day of Women and Girls in Science. Here at Sensia, we think this initiative deserves recognition, and it gives us the chance to spotlight an incredibly talented member of our team.

It has long been recognized that Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) fields are essential to tackling the sustainability challenge – yet women continue to be under-represented in these industries.

As part of our drive towards Sustainable Intelligent Action, we’re working hard to attract women and girls to enjoy a career at Sensia. After all, diversity heightens innovation.

To shine a light on how we’re standing side-by-side with the UN’s sustainable development goal 5, Gender Equality, we invited Jingai Wu, Software Engineering Team Lead, to speak to us about her experiences.

Jingai, on careers for women…

Fascinated by technology from a young age, Jingai is an example to young women around the world. Two decades ago, the world was very different, but she saw a path for herself that would inspire many.

"I’ve was always captivated by technology and its potential to solve complex real-world problems. In 20 years, I’ve worked in many capacities at SLB and Sensia – from hands-on software development to project management and technical leadership.

I’ve also worked in both China and the United States. It’s been an incredible journey, and I’d encourage any woman or girl with a dream to follow their heart."

On sustainability…

Jingai is a firm believer in the future of our planet and is cognizant that we must come together to build a sustainable world. With the advancements in science and technology, she sees her role as crucial to unlocking opportunities for meaningful change.

"As a software engineering lead, my skill set allows me to guide the team to develop code that helps drive the sustainability agenda. My focus is on eliminating waste and fostering continuous learning. Conducting root cause analyses means we can really get to the bottom of what is causing inefficiencies.

But we can't do it alone. I’m always seeking and giving feedback to stakeholders, experts, and end users to make a real difference together."

On her passion for life…

Behind every talented woman here at Sensia, there is a person. Each with unique interests. Jingai is dedicated to passing on her expertise to younger engineers and learning new things from them. She loves hiking and is also a keen painter.

"I’ve always loved to hike in all weather conditions, and more recently I’ve started to learn how to paint with oils, so far, so good! I find the great outdoors and the creativity of painting a refreshing alternative from my daytime coding."

Let’s celebrate together.

In some cutting-edge technology fields, only one in five professionals is female, and in most industries, women account for just 28% of graduates*. Visit us on LinkedIn and show your support for women and girls across all STEM professions.
